TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 10 Utah Softball found a way to seal its series with No. 23 Arizona State this afternoon. Gutsy efforts in the circle combined with
Bridget Castro's seventh-inning solo shot gave the Utes a 2-1 victory.
Â
With the score tied and the bats held in check by ASU's Alyssa Loza, Castro smacked her first homer of the season to give the Utes a much-needed jolt. It was the 16
th of the senior's career.
Â
"I was just trying to hit the ball hard, " Castro said. "I just wanted to stay focused during my at-bat and it went out. It worked perfectly."
Â
After the dramatic dinger,
Miranda Viramontes headed back to the circle for her second inning of relief. Nichole Chilson started things off with a ball to right that narrowly missed clearing the wall. After settling for a double, she moved over to third on a bunt.
Â
With the tying run 60 feet away,
Heather Bowen snagged a liner to freeze the runner and Viramontes got a fly ball to
Delilah Pacheco in center to end the contest. The junior improved to 13-2 on the season after coming on in relief of
Katie Donovan.
Â
Donovan ran into trouble early, issuing a pair of walks in the first and second innings. However, she got a pop up to
Hannah Flippen and a fly ball to
Kay Kay Fronda to escape damage.
Â
Utah struck during the fourth inning as
Alyssa Barrera worked a four-pitch walk and Flippen bunted her way on base. After an
Anissa Urtez sacrifice, Bowen's ball hit to the right side scored the first run of the game.
Â
ASU answered in the fifth, receiving a one-out double from Margaret Stahm, the first hit of the game off Donovan. Taylor Becerra followed with a single to tie the game, but she was alertly pegged down trying to stretch for second.
Â
Donovan exited after going five innings, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out five. Her counterpart, Loza, was making her first Pac-12 start. She threw a complete game for the Sun Devils but suffered her first loss of the season
Â
Upon Viramontes' entrance in the sixth, a leadoff single greeted her. She was able to field a comebacker that struck her in the leg to get an out and with the lead run on third, notch consecutive strikeouts to preserve the tie and set the table for Castro's climactic crush.
Â
"We talk about having fun and setting goals for ourselves," Castro added. "We've been going up since my freshmen year and we just want to win for each other. We came in here knowing it would be a battle and it didn't matter how it happened as long as we won."
Â
The Utes will host Weber State on Wednesday with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. It will be Youth Night at Dumke Family Softball Stadium with a mascot race and postgame autograph session scheduled.
