SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Softball capped an amazing weekend at Dumke Family Softball Stadium with its largest NCAA Tournament win in program history, 14-0, over BYU.
Â
Two days after setting new program marks in a 10-0 win over Fordham, the Utes banged out 17 hits and scored four runs or more against three different BYU pitchers.
Â
"I'm just happy for these girls, especially the seniors to go out on senior day on their field — assuming we're not going to get to host next weekend, which is still on the table — that's the sweetest part for me," Utah head coach
Amy Hogue said. "Those other girls will get to come back and play some more games here and do some big things, but to have it end like that for these kids that have worked so hard, that's why it is so sweet for me."
Â
Hannah Flippen became Utah's new hit queen with three knocks, giving her 261 for her career and breaking the previous mark held by Cyndee Bennett (1994-97).
Â
"My head is still spinning and I can't see anything, but it's awesome," Flippen said. "It feels great. I love winning. I love winning on this field. I love winning with my teammates."
Â
Meanwhile,
Anissa Urtez was a monster at the dish, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five driven in. Over the last three years, she is batting ,375 in postseason play for the Utes with seven runs scored and 12 RBI.
Â
"I struggled a little bit yesterday so I tried to change my mindset for today, just see the ball down and hit strikes," Urtez added. "It worked. I think everyone else with the energy and everything that we were doing in the dugout and the fans, it just helped us — the whole atmosphere."
Â
The top four batters in Utah's lineup were a combined 9-for-15 with nine runs scored and eight runs batted in.
Â
Despite the staggering offensive numbers,
Miranda Viramontes was just as important in the circle for the Utes. She pitched shutout softball for 5 1/3 innings and over the past two seasons, has allowed five runs in 30 2/3 innings of NCAA Tournament action.
Â
Hailey Hilburn, yesterday's hero at the plate, retired the final two BYU batters to set of the celebrations.
Â
The fireworks started right away when a pitch hit leadoff batter
BreOnna Castaneda.        Â
Alyssa Barrera reached when she slapped a ball that was too hot for Alexa Strid to handle at short. A wild pitch brought in the game's first run and Flippen lifted a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Kelly Martinez was responsible for another run in the second when she lined a homer over the left-field wall. It was the first hit of the postseason for the freshman catcher.
Â
Utah added a pair in the third as Flippen reached via fielder's choice, stole second and scored on an Urtez single. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, another free pass brought in another for a 5-0 edge.
Â
With one out in the fourth, Barrera legged out a bunt and Flippen followed with a single. Urtez laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to push another run across.
Â
The Utes blew it open with eight runs in the sixth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate. The scoring started when Urtez smacked a two-run double and
Heather Bowen followed with a RBI two-bagger. Utah received RBI singles from
Bella Secaira,
Delilah Pacheco, Castaneda and Urtez, as well as a Barrera sacrifice fly, to cap the contest.
Â
Utah will now face the winner of the Seattle Regional in a Super Regional. If Washington is able to advance on its home field, the Utes will travel there next weekend. If Fresno State, Michigan or Montana advances, the Utes will host once again at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
