SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah volleyball team has added two players to the 2018 roster, head coach
Beth Launiere announced on Wednesday. Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres (Waimanalo, Hawaii) and Taylor Laugero (Escalon, Calif.) will both join the squad in the fall of 2018, adding to a 2017-18 recruiting class that also includes
Megan Yett (Caldwell, Idaho) and Kennedi Evans (Twin Falls, Idaho).
Â
"Saige and Taylor are great additions to our incoming class," said Launiere. "Along with Megan And Kennedi, this class has rounded out to be one of our top recruiting classes in program history."
Â
Ka'aha'aina-Torres was a three-year letterwinner out of 'Iolani High School, where she helped lead the Raiders to three consecutive Hawaii Division I State Title matches and a state championship in 2016. She recorded double-doubles in the previous two state title matches, collecting 16 kills and 11 digs in 2017, and registering 22 kills and 10 digs back in 2016. In three seasons at "Iolani High, Ka'aha'aina-Torres totaled 1,157 kills in 286 sets played for a career 4.05 kills-per-set average. She also managed to collect 61 service aces, 120 total blocks, 696 digs and 229 assists.
Â
Just this past season, Ka'aha'aina's 211 assists ranked fifth-most in the state of Hawaii, while her 325 digs ranked third-most in the state. She would go on to be named the Hawaii Star Advisor Player of the Year in November 2017.
Â
Ka'aha'aina, who will play at the setter position for the Utes, played club volleyball for Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club.
Â
"Saige is a talented volleyball player that can play every position," said Launiere. "We recruited her to be a setter, but she is a great attacker, passer and defensive player, as well. Saige is currently setting for her club team this spring after being named the Hawaii State Player of the Year as an outside hitter this fall. I love having setters that know the game and I am excited about bringing her talents to Utah."
Â
Laugero will transfer to the U following a two-year stint at Santa Clara, where she played at the libero/defensive specialist position in a total of 46 matches and 169 sets for the Broncos. During her time in Santa Clara, she registered 678 digs, 127 assists and 44 service aces. She led the Broncos with 471 digs (4.28/set) during her freshman season and just this past year, she ranked second on the team with 21 service aces. Laugero's sophomore season was cut short due to injury and her absence was noticed as SCU went 10-6 when she took the court, but were just 5-9 when she was out of the line-up.
Â
Laugero played high school volleyball at Escalon High School in Escalon, Calif., where she helped lead her Cougars to the state playoffs in her first three seasons with the team. She was also a four-time qualifier in tennis for the Girls Junior National Championships during her prep career.
Â
Laugero played club volleyball for Pacific Coast Volleyball Club.
Â
"Taylor is a talented player that will add depth to our libero position, as well as great experience to the defensive side of the game for the Utes," said Launiere. "She is a tremendous athlete, passer and defender. Taylor has played at a high level for two years at Santa Clara and we believe she will be an integral part our team this season. We could not be more excited about Taylor joining the Utah volleyball program."
