Utah adds four-star recruit and Swedish U21 champion
SALT LAKE CITY -Â Utah's men's tennis program has announced the addition of four-star recruit Paul McCallie and Swedish U21 National Champion Mathias Gavelin.
"We are extremely excited to announce the commitments of Mathias and Paul," head coach Roeland Brateanu stated. "Both players are very talented, hard working young men that fit great into our program and we cannot wait to start working with them."
Gavelin hails from Stockholm, Sweden and will join the Utes in the fall. He was rated as the No. 3 player in the Swedish junior rankings and earned the biggest victory of his career when he won the 2017 U21 Swedish Junior Championships.
"I chose the University of Utah because of the coaches and my campus experience during my official recruiting visit," said Gavelin. "I believe that the University of Utah can further develop my tennis game and help me to be a successful student-athlete."
Gavelin's best win is over Christoffer Solberg (ATP #830) and currently has a universal tennis rating (UTR) of 13.07.
Paul McCallie, a four-star recruit out of Atlanta, will also join the Utes in the fall. In 2017, he was one of 31 players to be named to the USTA Junior Leadership Team and also was the recipient of the Team Spirit Award at the Spring Team Championships.
"I'm honored to be selected to play for the University of Utah, "said McCallie. "The decision to attend Utah was based on the fact that it has many strong academic programs, in addition to being in the Pac-12 Conference. I also feel strongly that Coach Brateanu and his staff will enable me to continue developing my tennis talent and provide an environment to improve my leadership abilities on and off the court."
McCallie has a UTR of 11.39 and is No. 27 in the USTA National Rankings.
