During COVID-19 pandemic, Launiere and Leo Hopf wrote “Stop Competing and Start Winning: The Business of Coaching.” Launiere drops by the show to discuss her new book and preview the upcoming season. The Utes are ranked No. 10 in the AVCA poll, their highest preseason ranking in school history. Utah returns three All-Americans from a team that went 24-10 and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2019.

Former two-time honorable mention all-conference linebacker Mike Wright joins this edition of Utes Insider presented by Pepsi to look back at his career from 2006-09, which included Utah’s undefeated Sugar Bowl season in 2008. Wright, a native of Bountiful, Utah, led Utah in tackles in 2008 and was second on the team in 2009. During the podcast, Wright talks about what made the Utes’ defense so dominant in 2008 and how they were able to shut down an Alabama team that was ranked No.1 in the nation for five weeks in the Sugar Bowl.

Rev. France Davis has worked with the Utah football team since the early 2000s, is an emeritus adjunct professor at the University of Utah, and was the pastor for Calvary Baptist Church for 46 years before retiring last December. Since moving to Salt Lake City in the early 1970s, Davis has fought numerous battles on behalf of Utah’s black community. Part of our conversation with Rev. Davis will be about his time at the U, the other portion will center on his life experiences, which have provided him with unparalleled perspective on the issues caused by social injustice and racial inequality. He also offers great insight on what people can do to be a positive influence during these challenging times.

Utes Insider - Tim Drisdom, former Runnin’ Ute basketball player and musician

As the point guard for the Runnin’ Utes from 2002-06, Tim Drisdom was a part of three Mountain West Conference championships and a run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2005. During this episode of Utes Insider, Drisdom shares his insights on what made those teams so great, as well as his memories of playing for head coach Rick Majerus and alongside Andrew Bogut, who was the 2005 National Player of the Year.

Following a professional basketball career from 2007-10, Drisdom moved back to Salt Lake City to become a high school basketball coach and pursue two of his other passions in his life: religion and music. Drisdom currently serves as the musical director for The Point Church and the Salt Lake City Mass Choir. He recently released a song with his brother Terrence, who performs under the name ERNE, entitled “Hold On,” which aims to provide an inspirational message during these challenging times. It has already received over 14,000 views on YouTube.

Utes Insider – Former women’s basketball player Emily Potter

Emily Potter joins Mike Lageschulte to talk about her time with the Ute women’s basketball team, what drew her to Utah from Canada, her professional playing career and Europe, and new book she has produced to help adults maintain good mental health. While on campus at Utah from 2013-18, Potter joined the staff of the Daily Utah Chronicle and in February of 2018 wrote a column about her own struggles with mental health. She revealed that she had been battling depression and decided to seek help after struggling to find the energy to participate in team practices and activities. Potter talks during the interview about how she has found ways to maintain good mental health in recent years and continues to help others. As a Ute, Potter became the sixth player in program history to record 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds. She also became the all-time leader with 270 blocked shots and finished in the top-11 all-time in career scoring (1,635), total rebounds (1,037), rebounding average (8.1) and field goals made (675). Her senior year, Potter was named Pac-12 All-Conference and All-Defense honorable mention by the coaches. She was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. Potter has also played with the Canadian National Team and spent the past two years playing professionally in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Our second month of Utes Insider presented by Pepsi begins with Hannah Flippen, a two-time Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year in softball who is vying for a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

The first three-time All-American in school history looks back on her career at Utah, which included three trips to the NCAA Tournament and back-to-back Super Regional appearances in 2016 and 2017. Flippen also talks about her playing experience with the U.S. National Team, which dates back to 2017. She earned a roster spot for the 2020 Olympics, which has been pushed back to July and August of 2021.

This time, offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig joined host Mike Lageschulte, and we are making the interview available in its entirety. Ludwig breaks down the offensive personnel, including a remaking of the backfield with all-time leading rusher Zack Moss moving on to the NFL and the three candidates who will compete to replace Tyler Huntley at quarterback. Ludwig also talks about the evolution of his offensive philosophies over the years and what brought him back to Utah, where he worked previously from 2005-08.

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month and the challenges facing everyone during the coronavirus pandemic, we invited Jonathan Ravarino, the director of psychology and wellness for Utah Athletics, to join the program. Since Jonathan came on board in 2015, Utah has experienced tremendous growth in its mental health initiatives for student-athletes and staff. Those resources have become even more valuable since the collegiate athletics season was shut down in mid-March and student-athletes and were unexpectedly sent home. Jonathan and his staff have been working diligently to help everyone in the Utah Athletics family maintain good mental health during these trying times and prepare for what’s ahead. He also offers some great advice to help everyone navigate the challenges of the current pandemic.
