SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah cross country team will split up to compete in three different meets this weekend. The No. 20 ranked men's team, which dropped a notch in this week's polls, will travel to Bloomington, Ind., to compete in the Pre-NCAA meet on Oct. 16. Bloomington is the site of the NCAA National Championships on Nov. 22.
Traveling for the men's team will be: Chris Merkely, Travis Hildebrand, Teren Jameson, Lion Gallegos, Adam Stark, Mike Strauss and Phil Stoddard. Women's team captain Johanna Nielsen will also travel to Indiana to compete individually. Nielsen is coming off her second win of the season at the ASU Invitational last weekend, where the men's team placed second.
Thirty-five Division I schools will compete at the Pre-NCAA meet. The men's team will run an 8k race, Nielsen will run a 5k.
"This will give us a chance to run the course before the national championships and get a look some of the other teams in our division like Brigham Young, Weber State, Colorado and Colorado State," says Head Coach Mike Jones. "We will see how tough we are compared to them. I think our men's team will have a very good race and, if Johanna places in the top 25, I will be very pleased."
The women's team will compete in the UNLV Invitational Oct. 16 in Las Vegas, Nev. The women will run a 5k race beginning at 9:00 a.m. (PT). Competing will be: Daisy Freedman, Trina Bateman, Jennifer and Julie Osguthorpe, Lauren Adams and Kim Eldredge.
Additionally, Larry Stanley, Chris Gartz and Chris Laman will compete in the Utah State Invitational in Logan. They will run an 8k race beginning at 4:00 p.m.
Utah will have a week off before the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships Oct. 30 in Provo.
