PROVO, Utah -
PROVO,Utah-The No. 3 ranked Utes took early control of their meet with arch-rival Brigham Young and never let down on their way to a 195.150-192.00 win. Utah (3-0) kicked off the rare blowout in Provo with a 49.025 bar score. Freshman Deidra Graham led the way with a winning 9.875 routine. She was one of three Utes to win an individual event, with freshman Theresa Kulikowski winning floor (9.850) and beam (9.925) and junior Denise Jones taking vault honors (9.775).
Tight scoring was the rule of the night and partially accounted for Utah's sub-standard 48.60 vault score in the second rotation. Jones stuck her first-ever 10.0 valued vault in competition, but her winning score was just a 9.775. It was Jones' second vault win in as many weeks and came on a handspring half pike back.
Floor treated the Utes better in terms of scores, with Utah sweeping the first four places, led by Kulikowski's near flawless 9.85 routine. Her floor routine helped Utah net a 48.875 and stretched their lead to three points going into the final event.
Although the Utes didn't match BYU's problems on beam (three Cougars fell, one twice and another three times), they were glad to get off of the soon-to-be-retired apparatus with just one fall and a few bobbles. A new beam was to have been delivered prior to the meet, but only the "legs" arrived, forcing the teams to compete on a bouncy, sloping beam. It didn't affect Kulikowski, who never wavered en route to a 9.925 score.
