SALT LAKE CITY -
The Ute football team put on an 80-play scrimmage at McCarthey Practice Field Thursday and three quarterbacks made their pitch for the backup position come fall of 1999. Starting quarterback Darnell Arceneaux is out this spring while healing from surgery following a dislocated shoulder last season.
Junior T.D. Croshaw and junior college transfer Tony Alvarez took turns leading the No. 1 offense and each completed 6 of 8 pass attempts. Alvarez threw for 82 yards, while Croshaw threw for 39. Alvarez also ran the ball twice for 11 yards. Redshirt freshman Joel Gines was not as successful in terms of completions, connecting on just 3 off 11 passes, but he threw for 67 yards, including a 37-yard pass to tight end Scott Price.
Utah's running game picked up where it took off last year, when Mike Anderson and Omar Bacon led the Utes to their best rushing season in 14 years. In Thursday's scrimmage Anderson carried the ball 10 times for 41 yards while Bacon chipped in 34 yards on six carries. Junior fullback Nick Morgan led Utah with 56 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, John Frank and Chuck Pine each had a sack for eight yards and Maake Kemoeatu had a tackle for loss (2 yards). Patrick Dyson and Desmond Davis each had an interception.
