LAST WEEK OF CAMP
The Ute football team will close its 1999 spring camp this week, with a
practice on Tuesday and Red & White "game" on Thursday. Both will start at
approximately 3:30 p.m. at the McCarthey Practice Fields. The Utes have
undergone four weeks of practice so far, starting on March 25. They have
held scrimmages the last two Saturdays.
SPRING GAME THURSDAY
In somewhat of a departure from past years, the Utes will end their spring
drills with a Red & White game on Thursday. In the past, Utah has opted for
a situational scrimmage to end spring ball. According to Head Coach Ron
McBride, the Ute coaches will choose teams for the scrimmage. Several
players will be held out to avoid potential injury.
UTES SIGN WITH NFL TEAMS
Three Utes who finished their careers last fall have signed with NFL teams.
Linebacker Phil Glover was drafted by Tennessee in the seventh round, while
receiver Daniel Jones (St. Louis) and defensive tackle Pene Talamaivao
(Buffalo) both signed free agent contracts.
SPRING INJURIES
Out for the remainder of spring ball, but expected to be full strength by
fall: junior all-conference linebacker Kautai Olevao (subluxated his
kneecap on March 30), starting tight end Andy Kassotis (knee scoped on
April 14), offensive guard John Watson (index finger, surgery scheduled for
April 20), running back Mbe Agbor (hamstring), defensive lineman Tevita
Vakalahi (hamstring), defensive back Cory DeSanti (fractured rib), starting
center Steve McKane (quad) and David Smith (broken fibula). Todd Hourigan
(bruised leg) is probable.
MCBRIDE SAYS
"We thought a game might be fun for the kids and we needed another live
situation. We discussed the possibility last week of having a full blown
scrimmage Saturday (April 17) and then having a game on Thursday. We went
ahead with our plans for Saturday and decided to do the same for Thursday.
However, we don't need to work all the guys, so we'll hold them out to
avoid possible injuries. Offensively, we'll probably hold out Josh Cochran,
Luis Park, Mike Anderson and maybe Omar Bacon. We'll let all of the
quarterbacks. Defensively, we'll hold out John Frank and maybe Teneil
Ethridge. We'll let the other guys play."
