SALT LAKE CITY - The nearly 10,000 people who chose to watch the Utah-Florida gymnastics meet over the Utah Jazz basketball game Monday were rewarded for their choice. The No. 4 ranked Utes tied the ninth-best score in school history in a 196.975-193.750 romp over 1998 NCAA runner-up Florida. It was Utah's second win in four days against a Southeast Conference opponent and its best meet of the year.
In a night of great individual efforts, Theresa Kulikowski stood out, recording the eighth-best all-around score in school history. The freshman, who has yet to score lower than 39.00 in the all-around this year, tied teammates Angie Leonard and Shannon Bowles, among others, for eighth place in the books with her 39.60 effort. Nowhere was Kulikowski more spectacular than on floor, where she looked absolutely flawless in a 9.975 routine. Her floor routine secured an all-around victory over teammate Bowles, who finished second with a season-best a 39.275.
For the second straight meet, Utah came out firing on its first event, topping its season vault best set just four days previously, with a 49.150. Also for the second time in a row, Theresa Wolf won the vault, with a career-high 9.925. Junior Denise Jones tied her season-best with a 9.875, while Kulikowski's 9.80 second vault was her best yet. Florida, in the meantime, was scoring a 48.075 on the bars, giving Utah a one-point lead after the first rotation.
Utah bumped it up a yet another notch on the second rotation. A rare fall by All-American Angie Leonard on bars came after the Utes had already racked up a 49.250their second best bar score of the year. Kulikowski won the event for the second straight week and her third time this year. Led by Chrissy Van Fleet's 9.875, good for second on the night, Florida managed a 48.675, bringing Utah's two-event lead to 98.40-96.75.
But the big news of the night came on the balance beam, where Utah had crashed and burned the previous two meets. Utah's big hitters, Kulikowski and Bowles concluded a season-best 49.20 beam set with twin 9.90s. They had good company. In her first beam routine to count this year, All-American Molly Northrop turned in a 9.80, while Theresa Wolf contributed a season-best 9.825. Utah placed 1-6 on beam and put the meet on ice.
But the big concern of Ute Head Coach Greg Marsden was that his team put together a complete meet, something it hadn't done for two weeks. And the Utes made sure it happened on floor exercise. Kulikowski started off a string of 9.90 scores from her No. 4 position. She received a 10.0 from one judge, but the other found a half a tenth somewhere to drop the score to a 9.975. With the crowd on its feet after Kulikowski's show, Deidra Graham and Leonard responded with season-tying 9.90 scores to end the meet.
