It was "senior night" in the Huntsman Center, but every class performed like the featured honoree in a 197.475-195.475 Ute win over Brigham Young. Freshman Theresa Kulikowski shared the all-around spotlight with senior Angie Leonard. Kulikowski won her sixth straight all-around title (seven total) with a 39.650, as well as bars and floor. But Leonard countered with a 39.55 all-around that placed her second and she won the balance beam with a career-best 9.95. Seniors Sarah and Molly Northrop made the most of their last regular season meet in the Huntsman Center as well. Sarah scored a 9.85 on bars to place sixth and Molly tied for fourth on the beam with a 9.90.
The Utes encountered some stiff scoring and one bad break on their opening event, but still took a lead they never relinquished. For the second straight week, Angelika Schatton scored a career-high 9.85 to win the vault competition. Shannon Bowles was close behind, finishing second with a season-best 9.825. A mistake on the number that was raised before her vault cost Denise Jones, who stuck her first vault but was docked for the mistake. Even with the blunder, Utah scored a respectable 48.925 on the vault to BYU's 48.725 on the bars.
The Utes increased their lead to a point after a sensational bar set that saw three exhibition competitors post a 9.825 or better. Kulikowski won the event with a 10.0her fourth perfect score of the year and the first 10.0 in the Huntsman Center this year. Leonard brushed with perfection on bars, too, following Kulikowski's beautiful performance with a 9.95. Jones and Deidra Graham each scored a 9.90 to help boost Utah to a 49.60 score and a 98.525 two-event mark.
Then Utah really took off. Molly Northrop opened the Ute beam set with a 9.90 that looked like it would be the score dropped until Bowles almost fell near the end of her routine and got a 9.725. Still, with Leonard and Ashley Kever knocking out 9.95's, Kulikowski a 9.925 and Jones a 9.90, Utah barely missed a school record with a 49.625. After three events, the Utes' lead had ballooned to 148.150-146.400.
They kept up the pace on floor, where Kulikowski edged teammates Bowles and Leonard for first with a 9.925 to their 9.90 scores. Leonard's routine finished the night for the magnificent senior, who received a standing ovation from the crowd of 10,902. Utah picked up another win during the meet by taking its 17th national attendance title in the last 18 years. The Utes averaged 10,571 fans in their six meets to top Georgia (9,506) and Alabama (9,428).
