The University of Utah golf team will compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championship beginning Monday, May 3-5 in Pebble Beach Calif, at the Poppy Hills Golf Course. Senior Jon Morgan, sophomores Shawn Edwards and Brock Padilla, and juniors Gregg Oliphant and Lance Richards will compete in Utahs last WAC championship.
The 16-team tournament will see eight top-50 teams play, including second-ranked UNLV, No. 16 New Mexico, No. 19 Brigham Young, No. 33 SMU, No. 36 Fresno State, No. 37 CSU, No. 38 TCU and No. 48 San Diego State. Eleven players ranked in the top-50 of the MasterCard Golf rankings will participate in this tournament. The Utes have momentum going into the championship.
Last week, Utah placed eighth at the Cougar Classic and third at the Bengal Invitational.
Head Coach Wayne Fisher believes that competing against five top-50 teams in the Cougar Classic was good preparation for the WAC championship.
"That tournament was a good measuring tool for us. The field at the Cougar Classic was a lot of the original WAC schools. We know we can compete with those teams. Most of the same teams will go on to the NCAA regionals."
Fisher hopes his team can play consistent and pull together three solid rounds. "We haven't put together three good rounds, but we know we have the talent to do it and we feel confident heading into the conference tournament."
Utah finished 10th in the WAC last year with Brock Padilla turning in a seventh place performance as a freshman (69-69-76, 214). Shawn Edwards and Gregg Oliphant tied for 37th and Jon Morgan finished in 64th place.
