Ute Diving
The Utah men's and women's diving teams travel to Tempe, Ariz., March
12-13 to compete in the Zone Diving Competition. The Zone competition
is the second step toward NCAA qualification in that participants
must first qualify for zone competition by making cuts during the
dual meet season. Those divers posting scores within the
qualification bracket then compete in the zone competition. From the
Western Zone, nine women and five men will make the NCAA Championship
cut. Utah is sending three divers to the zone competition: Nick
Smith, Crystal Gregory and Erica Fleming.
Divers to Watch
Smith, who is the entire Ute men's diving team, is coming off a
first-place finish at the 1999 Western Athletic Conference
Championships. He won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of
499.75 and was fifth in the 3-meter dive with 492.9 points. This
season, the junior also recorded seven dual meet wins and three
second-place finishes. The Utah native joined the team midway
through the 1997-98 season. At the 1998 WAC Championships, he placed
second in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter and qualified for the
1998 NCAA Championships, where he placed 31st in the 1-meter and 33rd
in the 3-meter. Gregory, a freshman from Bellevue, Wash., has
dominated Utah's 3-meter springboard competition. At the 1999 WAC
Championships, Gregory qualified for the Zone competition with a
third-place finish (500.35) in the platform dive. The score broke the
Utah record in the event. She also qualified in the 1 and 3-meter
dives. She finished third in the 1-meter (408.30) and seventh in the
3-meter (440.00). During dual meet competition, she logged six
first-place and six second-place finishes. Fleming, a transfer from
Fresno State, was eighth in the 3-meter (426.05) at the 1999 WAC
Championships and qualified for the zone competition. She also
finished ninth in the platform dive (276.80) and 10th in the 1-meter
(341.44). As a sophomore this year, Fleming won two events and was
second in four during the dual meet season. At the 1998 WAC
championships, she placed fifth in the platform dive, was seventh in
the 1-meter and third in the 3-meter.
