SALT LAKE CITY -
The No. 3 ranked Utes wasted no time making Head Coach Greg Marsden the first 700-win coach in collegiate gymnastics history, pummeling mistake-prone Minnesota 196.600-190.925 in the Huntsman Center. Utah's 196.60, the best reported in the nation at the meet's conclusion, could push Utah into the No. 1 spot when the new rankings come out late Tuesday.
It was over almost before it began, as the seventh-ranked Gophers fell out of contention, literally, with four falls on bars in their opening event. On the other end of the floor, Utah was busily arranging for Marsden's record-setting win and the 153rd consecutive regular season win in the Huntsman Center by racking up a 48.875 on the vault. Theresa Wolf gathered in her first win of the year on the horse with a 9.825.
Utah heated up even more on bars?its best event for a second straight week?scoring a 49.325. Sparking the Utes were Deidra Graham and Theresa Kulikowski, who finished the beautifully executed set with a 9.875 and a 9.95, respectively. Meanwhile on vault, Minnesota took itself out of the meet with a 48.250.
Perhaps the best highlight in a virtual Ute highlight show came in round three, where Utah erased the memories of its last two beam experiences in the Huntsman Center. All six Utes hit their routines in an impressive 49.10 performance, led by, who else, Kulikowski. The defending NCAA beam champ chipped in her second 9.95 of the night.
Way ahead, with no chance of losing, the Utes nonetheless cranked it up another notch on the floor exercise. Graham (9.90) and Kulikowski (9.925) again finished things off with a bang and the Utes boogied to a 49.300.
Kulikowski finished the night as the victor on three individual events (bars, 9.95, beam, 9.95 and floor 9.925), as well as the all-around (39.525). Kulio already has eight wins in just two meets this year and raised her career victory total to 45. It marked the 13th time in as many attempts she has topped 39.00 in her two years.
