Salt Lake City -
The Utah golf team begins its spring season on Feb. 23-25 at the John A. Burns Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. Competing for the Utes will be: Shawn Edwards, Ryan Ellis, Brock Padilla, Gregg Oliphant and Clint Christiansen.
The tournament will be played at the Leilehua Golf Course. Eight of the 18 schools that will participate are ranked among the top 50 teams in the country according to this week's Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Participating teams are: No. 17 Arizona, No. 6 Brigham Young, No. 33 Colorado State, Hawaii at Manoa, No. 9 University of Nevada, Las Vegas, No. 25 Oklahoma, Pacific, Southern Methodist, No. 22 Auburn, California, Hawaii at Hilo, Nagoya, No. 15 New Mexico, No. 3 Oklahoma State, San Jose State, University of Texas, El Paso and Weber State.
Head Coach Wayne Fisher believes that his team is in good shape and prepared to play after more than three months off. "The weather has been so nice that we have been able to hit balls and practice outside," he says. "It helps to see where the ball is going instead of just into a net."
The John Burns Invitational is typically one of Utah's most competitive tournaments of the season. Last year Utah was in last place after the first round of play but began to gain ground moving into 18th place after two rounds. Utah ended up placing 16th out of 21 teams (305-292-285--882). Gregg Oliphant led the Utes last year in Hawaii placing 52nd and shooting 219 (79-72-68) over three rounds. Shawn Edwards placed 73rd (77-76-71--224) and Brock Padilla finished 86th (75-77-73--227).
"We typically face our hardest competition and highest ranked teams at this tournament," says Fisher. "It's always exciting to start the spring season against a field like this. Even if we play well, we might not finish as high as we would in another tournament. This is a nice way to start out the spring season and the team is always anxious to get back into it."
