PROVO, Utah -
In pre-meet warmups at Utah's tri-meet at Brigham Young, Theresa Wolf landed on her head in warmups and, unbeknownst to anyone, suffered a mild concussion. The entire Ute team appeared to be unconscious all night, scoring a season-best 197.200 and trouncing host BYU (195.650) and Southern Utah (193.300).
Wolf competed on bars and beam, scoring a career-best 9.875 on bars and a 9.850 on beam, before admitting she was woozy. She was diagnosed with a mild concussion and was removed from the lineup. The more-shorthanded- than-ever Utes didn't miss a beat. In her first floor routine of the year, Kim Allan let fly a 9.875. Ashley Kever, who won beam with a 9.950, replaced Wolf with a 9.725 on vault.
Utah went with four all-arounders, three of whom topped 39.00. Deidra Graham was the all-around winner with a career-best 39.575. Graham also won vault with a 9.90 and tied for first on bars with senior teammate Jenny Schmidt (9.90). In second all-around, also with a career-high, was Angelika Schatton (39.425). In the first collegiate all-around of her career, Allan again showed why she'll be tough to keep out of the lineup on any event come the post-season. In addition to her impressive floor routine, she scored a 9.875 as a replacement for Kylee Wagner on beam. Her 39.30 all-around totals ranks in the top five for a Ute freshman debut. Senior Denise Jones saw her streak of 39.00 performances stop at seven thanks to a fall on bars. She had a 38.850.
Utah's sixth highest score ever came on the road, where Utah also recorded its second-best score of the year, a 197.075. The Utes appeared more comfortable than their hosts on Saturday, with only Jones' fall on bars the only barrier to them hitting all 24 routines.
Utah's regional qualifying score will improve significantly with the big score. The Utes can now drop a 194.800 scored at LSU early in the season. They will also be able to count their 197.075 scored at Utah State.
