SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah golf team returns to California to participate in the Anteater Invitational on Mar. 27-28. The tournament will be played at the Coto de Caza North Course with five of the nation's top 50 teams in the field. Gregg Oliphant, Shawn Edwards, Brock Padilla, Jason Shepherd and Ryan Ellis will compete for Utah.
Last year: Utah placed eighth out of 19 teams. Gregg Oliphant placed 30th (77-78-74-229) out of 100 golfers and Shawn Edwards placed 50th (76-77-79-232).
The Utes are looking forward to the competion. "This is one of our favorite tournaments to play," says head coach Wayne Fisher. "It is a well run tournament and the team always gets excited to go back. The course has the same type of greens and grasses that we played on last week, so it won't be a huge change. Hopefully we will have some momentum coming off of last week's performance."
Last week: This tournament comes right on the heels of Utah's fifth place finish at the USD Invitational in San Diego on Mar. 21 where Utah had two top ten performances. The Utes were led by senior Gregg Oliphant who had his best finish of the season placing fourth overall (75-77-73-225) followed by Shawn Edwards in sixth place (76-78-72-226). "Gregg and Shawn played the way I know they are capable of, but we still need at least four of the five to start clicking together," says Fisher. "We're having a hard time getting all five to step up. When that happens, we can be competitive."
