SALT LAKE CITY -
University of Utah Swim Director Dennis Tesch has announced his resignation to pursue other interests. Tesch, the 1995 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, has coached the Ute men's team for the last seven years and the women's team since 1998.
"I've had a great time here, but I'm ready for a career change," said Tesch of his decision. "I look forward to watching the men's and women's swimming and diving programs as they continue to grow."
As the men's coach, Tesch compiled a 39-26-1 record and won two WAC Championships (1994 and 1995). In three years as head coach of the women's program, Tesch was 10-23. Both teams finished fifth at the 2000 Mountain West Athletic Conference Championships.
Nine athletes have qualified for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships during Tesch's tenure as head coach and two were named All-Americans. He coached 11 conference champions. Tesch's swimmers own 50 percent of the men's and 90 percent of the women's school records.
He also contributed to Utah's success in the pool. Tesch swam for the Utes from 1983-87 and won a WAC championship in the 500 freestyle in 1987.
"Dennis has contributed a lot to this program, both as an athlete and a coach," said Ute Associate Athletics Director Amy Hackett. "But we respect Dennis' decision to make a career change and wish him the best."
