Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team enjoyed success off the court through many academic accomplishments in 1999-2000. Nine Utes made the honor roll with six athletes also earning Dean's List honors. Seven athletes earned Academic All-MWC honors and two were named MWC Scholar-Athletes. That is over half (9 out of 14) of the athletes on the team receiving academic recognition in 1999-2000.
All but one starter and three reserves were named to the fall semester honor roll. Athletes qualifying with at least a 3.00 grade point average were Kristina Andersen, Lauren Beckman, Amy Ewert, Lindsay Herbert, Lori Red, Lindsay Sodja and Janna Whitman. Andersen, Beckman, Ewert and Whitman also garnered Dean's List honors with a 3.50 GPA or better. Kristina Andersen, Lauren Beckman, Amy Ewert, Tiana Fuertes, Lori Red, Janna Whitman and Caroline Matthews were named to the spring semester honor roll. Andersen, Beckman, Ewert, Fuertes and Matthews each made Dean's List for the spring semester. Although records were not kept until 1986, fifty-two players have made the honor roll a combined 215 times during Coach Elliott's 17-year tenure at Utah.
Utah women's basketball was also honored for its academic success by the Mountain West Conference. Kristina Andersen, Lauren Beckman, Amy Ewert, Caroline Matthews, Lori Red, Lindsay Sodja and Janna Whitman earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference recognition. Andersen and Beckman were also named Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes in 1999-2000.
Seniors Janna Whitman and Tiana Fuertes are on track to receive their degrees in December of 2000.
The Utes finished with a 23-8 overall record and an 11-3 mark in MWC play. Utah won both the inaugural Mountain West Conference regular-season title and the tournament championship. The 1999-2000 season marks the first Utah women's basketball team ever to win both the regular-season title and the conference tournament championship outright. It was the fifth consecutive conference title and eighth overall under Coach Elliott. Utah also earned an invitation to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the last 14 seasons.
"It was a great year for us in terms of competition, as well as academics. Our kids did exceptionally well this year. Over one half of our scholarship athletes received academic accolades of some sort this year, and when you take into consideration all the different backgrounds and experiences that are recruited into a Division I institution, that says a lot about our athletes' character and their effort to be students first. Obviously, I am very proud of that," said Elliott.
