SALT LAKE CITY -
A combination of injuries and spirited head to head competition has caused quite a bit of movement in the Utah football two deep since camp began on August 11.
Off the two deep for various periods of time due to injury are: backup center Dustin McQuivey, backup offensive guard Joe McCullum and backup defensive tackle Ed Johnson. McQuivey sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in Tuesday's scrimmage and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. McCullum and Johnson both re-fractured a bone in their foot and underwent surgery. They will be out 4-6 weeks.
Replacing McQuivey as Steve McKane's backup at center is new walk-on Seth Little (6-4, 287, Jr.), a Dixie College transfer. Another junior college transfer, Talo Tavale (6-3, 303, Jr.) of Palomar JC, will now back up Sam White at right guard. Playing behind Garrett Smith at defensive tackle is sophomore Tevita Vakalahi.
There have also been several non-injury related depth chart changes since camp began. Big juco transfer Phil Blackmon (6-5, 319) out of Santa Monica JC, has moved into the No. 2 spot at left tackle behind Doug Kaufusi. Sean Souza, who held that position, has moved to left guard, where he is backing up Ed Ta'amu. At quarterback, redshirt freshman Lance Rice (6-1, 193) has taken the lead for the No. 3 quarterback spot, ahead of competitors Tony Alvarez and Joel Gines.
Defensively, the big news is at open end, where returned missionary Jason Kaufusi (6-3, 242, Fr.) has already established himself as the starter, pushing out projected starter Marcus Jones. If he stays ahead of Jones, Utah will have two Kaufusi brothers starting-one on each line (brother Doug is Utah's starting offensive tackle). Sophomore linebacker Brooks Bahr is recovered from the knee injury that shortened his freshman season and caused him to miss spring ball and he has latched onto the backup rover spot. At nickel back, newcomer Quincy Watkins, a sophomore transfer from Los Angeles Harbor JC, is second behind Patrick Dyson.
