THIS WEEK: The Utah men's and women's cross country teams open the 2000 season against a competitive field in the Idaho State Invitational on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in Pocatello, Idaho. Top teams from the Mountain West, Big Sky, and Big West conferences will battle Utah for the first win of the season. Utah State, Weber State and Idaho State will be in the field with Utah.
MEN'S OUTLOOK: The Utes are coming off one of the best recruiting seasons in history. Look for junior college transfers Brad Christenson (College of Southern Idaho) and Aleksander Tomas (College of Northern Idaho) to contribute largely to the men's team's success. Returning for the men is junior Teren Jameson. After a strong fall in cross country, Jameson finished second in the 5,000 meters at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships to earn all-league honors. He was also named to the Academic All-America team.
Coach Mike Jones predicts the men's team will be in the hunt for the 2000 Mountain West Conference championship. He is also hopeful of several runners qualifying for nationals this season.
WOMEN'S OUTLOOK: Returning junior Trina Bateman leads a young women's team. Five freshmen recruits from throughout the state of Utah look to be strong for the Utes: Venessa Barnes (Kearns HS), Jennifer Brusch (Orem HS), Nellie Hammons (Layton HS), April Frame (Alta HS) and Charity Catmull (Bingham HS). Coach Mike Jones looks for the team to finish the season strong after the young group gains collegiate experience.
COMING UP: Next Saturday the Utes are off to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Colorado State Invitational.
