SALT LAKE CITY -
University of Utah gymnast Erin Prewitt has decided to retire early as a result of injuries suffered prior to coming to the U. It has been determined that the ankle injury that forced Prewitt to redshirt as a freshman last year will prevent her from returning to high level gymnastics.
Utah Coach Greg Marsden said, "This is a disappointing situation for both Erin and our gymnastics program. Erin came to Utah as one of the most highly recruited gymnasts in the country and was expected to make an immediate impact. An attempt to surgically repair the ankle didn't produce the results we hoped for. It became obvious to everyone that it is unlikely that Erin would ever be able to return to a high level of gymnastics. Erin is in the Honors Program and a 4.0 student in pre-med. I told her that, as difficult as this is, she has a great future as a doctor and right now her focus should be in preparing for that."
Prewitt will continue her studies at the University of Utah and will work in the school's sports information department.
