Looking at the Utes
Utah heads for San Diego after a double-header split with Mesa State on Tuesday. The Utes are currently 17-13 overall and 6-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The 6-3 mark is good for first-place in the conference.
Centerfielder Sam Swenson leads the team in hitting with a .381 average. He also leads the team in runs scored (34) and is tied with Chris Shelton for the team lead with nine homers.
Ryan Bailey leads the team with his five wins. He also leads the team with 37 strikeouts. Travis Palmer leads all starters with a 3.78 ERA while Matt McAfee leads all Ute pitchers with a 1.32 ERA and three saves.
Scouting San Diego State
The Aztecs come into this series with the Utes at 16-11 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference. They have lost two straight after a six-game winning streak. SDSU has won eight of their last 12.
As a team SDSU is hitting .305. Six Aztecs are hitting above .300, led by Carlo Cota at .376. Cota also leads the team with 25 RBI. Anthony Gwynn leads the team with 31 runs scored. Sean Pierce and Pilar Amaya are tied for the team lead with two homers.
Eight different pitchers have made starts for the Aztecs this season. Royco Ring leads the team with five wins, but all 16 of his appearances have come in relief. Rory Shortell is second with four wins. Ring also leads the team with a 1.56 ERA and four saves.
Mesa State Rewind
The Utes managed to split a double-header with the Mesa State Mavericks on Tuesday. Mesa State jumped on the Utes in game one, taking the contest 17-8. Utah responded in game two with a 6-2 win.
Game one was an offensive show by the Mavericks. They scored six times in the first inning and added four more in the second. The Utes kept it close, trailing 10-6 after two innings, but never got closer.
Game two saw Ute starter David Ebright dominate the Mavericks. Ebright held Mesa State to just two earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. Benson Barrera relieved Ebright in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out. He then proceeded to strike out the next two hitters.
Utah Tidbits
Utah swept the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week awards last week. Chris Shelton was named the player of the week after going 5-for-12 (.417) with eight RBI, four runs scored, two triples and three home runs. Ryan Bailey won the pitcher of the week after throwing his second stright complete game on Friday. In that game he allowed just two earned runs on six hits while striking out five and not allowing a walk. This is the first time that either player has been named the player of the week.
Sam Swenson has moved into the team lead with his .381 batting average. He is currently on a seven game hitting streak, during which he has gone 12-for-25 (.480) with 10 runs scored, nine RBI, three doubles and three homers.
With runners in scoring position the Utes are hitting .338. They have 118 hits in 349 at bats in that situation. Mike Westfall leads the team with his .366 average.
This seaon the Utes are 7-4 against left handed starters. As a team they hit .319 off of lefties, compared to .314 against righties.
