SALT LAKE CITY - After playing eight games and taking in as many sights as the schedule would allow, the Utah men's basketball team returned from its two and a half week European trip on June 6.
Utah went 4-4 playing club teams in the Canary Islands, Spain and France. Finishing with a glowing record wasn't the goal of the trip. More importantly, the Utes set out to improve their individual skills and share the travel experience of a lifetime.
The travel party of eight players, coaches and staff relaxed on black sand beaches in the Canary Islands, visited a famous cathedral as well as the Olympic village in Barcelona, saw an ancient walled city in France, visited a Picasso museum, watched a flamenco dance in Spain, took a day trip to Monaco and ate frog's legs on the Italian Riviera.
Rick Majerus, who coached the Utes during a productive 10 days of practice before the trip, elected not to make the journey because of the possibility of inadequate health care overseas. Assistants Dick Hunsaker and Jeff Strohm directed the team in Majerus' absence.
Chris Burgess and Lance Allred both played limited minutes because of injuries. Burgess is still recovering from ankle surgery the week after the season ended, while Allred injured his back during the team's pre-trip practice sessions. Allred had an MRI revealing a lumbar sprain and disc tear, according to Ute trainer Trevor Jameson.
Without Burgess and Allred at full strength, Cameron Koford played most of the minutes at center. Britton Johnsen played the power forward spot, Trace Caton played small forward, Jeff Johnsen was the shooting guard and Nick Jacobson played point guard. Gray-squad member Jonathan Taylor also made the trip and played a lot of minutes due to the of the lack of depth on the bench.
The coaching staff was pleased with the play of Koford considering that he did not play any extended minutes the past season. Jacobson, who was moved from his more natural two guard position, showed terrific poise under pressure. He also shot well early in the trip before fatigued set in at the end. Caton was able to play a lot of minutes and shot well. Jeff Johnsen shot the ball exceptionally well early. Britton Johnsen was terrific game in and game out with his effort on the boards, and ran the court well.
The Utes began the trip with two wins in the Canary Islands, then lost their next four against better teams in Spain before finishing with a pair of wins in France. Fatigue stemming from a lack of numbers and physical games was a factor in the Utes' shooting percentage descending as the trip progressed. The European game crews did not keep detailed statistics.
