SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah gymnastics team had the second-best grade point average of any gymnastics team in the nation in the NACGC national academic rankings, released on August 16.
The Utes, who were the NACGC academic champs a year ago, ranked ahead of every other team that qualified for the 2001 NCAA Championships. Utah, which tied for fifth at the 2001 NCAA Championships, posted a team GPA of 3.6292. The lone team ahead of Utah academically was Southern Utah (3.7244 GPA).
Eight Utes received 2001 Scholastic Academic All-America honors: Theresa Kulikowski (4.00), Theresa Wolf (4.00), Shannon Bowles (3.96), Annie Medcalf (3.83), Veronique Leclerc (3.80), Kim Allan (3.72), Kylee Wagner (3.63) and Lindsay Tanner (3.51). Seven of Utah's academic All-Americans competed at the 2001 NCAA Championships (Allan was injured) and six were NCAA All-Americans: Kulikowski, Wolf, Bowles, Leclerc and Wagner.
Kulikowski, a three-time NCAA champion (she won the all-around and balance beam in 1999 and the balance beam in 2001), has never received below a 4.00 in the classroom since coming to Utah.
The top 10 NACGC teams by grade point average were: 1. Southern Utah 3.7244, 2. Utah 3.6292, 3. Eastern Michigan 3.6014, 4. Illinois State 3.5400, 5. Alabama 3.5211, 6. Kent State 3.5110, 7. Brown 3.5082, 8. Yale 3.4831, 9. Florida 3.4500, 10. Illinois-Chicago 3.4414.
