SALT LAKE CITY - This Week: Utah opens its 2001 men's and women's cross country season at the Idaho State Invitational on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in Pocatello, Idaho. The Utes will compete against runners from Utah State, Weber State, Utah Valley State College, and Idaho State. This season marks the first time in 22 years that the Utes will be under new direction. With the retirement of long time head coach Mike Jones, former Weber State alum and assistant coach Brian Appell takes over as the head coach of the men's and women's cross country teams.
Men's Outlook: The Utes will look to seniors B. J. Christensen and Teren Jameson to be team leaders. Jameson had a successful season last year, finishing 38th in the NCAA Cross Country Championships and earning All-American honors. Christensen received all-conference honors in outdoor track last season. Other returnees expected to round out the top five runners for Utah are junior Lion Gallegos, sophomore Colby Frazier and senior Alexander Thomas.
Women's Outlook: Returning for the Utes will be Junior Trina Bateman, and sophomores Jennifer Brusch and Charity Catmull. Brusch and Catmull shared top honors last season. However, Coach Appell will redshirt Brusch and Catmull this season in order to develop their potential with out the risk of injury. Also returning for the Utes will be Senior Tara Tidwell- Hall. She is returning after missing two seasons due to a leg injury suffered in a bus accident while going to a indoor track and field meet in Boise, Idaho, in 1999.
Coming Up: Saturday, Sept. 15 the Ute men's and women's cross country teams will head to Bozeman, Mont., for the Montana State Invitational.
