Salt Lake City - The No. 22 ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team defeated the New Mexico Lobos in three games, 30-20, 30-25, 30-14, homecoming weekend, Sept. 29, at Crimson Court. Utah improves to 8-3 overall, 1-1 in the MWC. New Mexico falls to 2-9 on the season, 0-4 in MWC play.
Junior Sylva Strzinkova led the Utes with 14 kills for a .522 hitting percentage and tied a career-high 15 digs. Teammate Kim Turner racked up 11 kills for a .316 hitting percentage. Adrianne Drake had nine kills, five digs and five total blocks. Alisa Geddes tallied seven kills and nine digs, while Jackie Morrill added nine digs. Freshman setter Kelsie Kartchner notched 35 assists in the match. As a team Utah posted a .215 hitting percentage and 9.0 total team blocks.
For the Lobos, Anna Reines totaled eight kills and teammates Malena Thompson and Vanessa Shields each had six kills. Kelly Griffin posted 21 assists and seven digs. New Mexico hit for just .028, adding 3.0 total team blocks.
"We're dominant physically, but we are also executing very well on our side of the net," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "Sylva (Strzinkova) had a heck of a game and weekend, but this is what we expect of her. She is doing a great job as well as the team, and I am very pleased with the way we are executing right now. "
UP NEXT: The Utes hit the road on Fri., Oct. 5, travelling to Fort Collins, Colo., and facing Colorado State at 7:00 p.m. On Sat., Oct. 6, Utah will take on the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo. The Utes are back in action at home on Fri., Oct. 12, facing the UNLV Rebels at 7:00 p.m. and the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Oct. 13, at 7:00 p.m. On Tues., Oct. 16, Utah will host the Weber State Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. The Utes will take on in-state rival BYU on Fri., Oct. 19 at Crimson Court at 7:00 p.m.
