TERRA HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Utah cross country teams competed in the Pre-National Meet on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Utes ran without freshman Kurt Michaels, who withdrew from the race before the one-mile marker due to a knee injury. Michaels is expected to be back for the Mountain Regional Championship on Nov. 16. The men's team, running 8,000 meters, finished 15th out of 35 (391 points), while the women finished 27th out of 38 (707 points), running a 6,000 meter race.
Junior Delfino Arevalo led the men's team placing 20th (24:28) out of 235 runners. Following Arevalo were senior Lion Gallegos at 68th (25:09), junior Colby Frazier at 88th (25:18) and sophomore Brent Moore at 90th (25:21).
On the women's side, junior Tara Hall led the way placing 86th (21:68), followed by sophomore Charity Vernon at 94th (22:01) and freshman Stacie Grover at 168th (22:46).
"Both teams should move up in the regional ranking after this meet," said Head Coach Brian Appell. "They are steadily improving but we are still not guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Championship meet and have to step it up in order to make earn a spot."
Next on the Utes' schedule is the Mountain West Conference Championships on Nov. 1.
