THIS WEEK:
Utah opens the swimming and diving season with meets against UC Irvine and San Diego State. The season starts in Irvine as both the men and women will go against UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 25. On Oct. 26 the women will get set to take on the San Diego State Aztecs, in San Diego beginning at 9:00 a.m.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
UC Irvine is beginning a new era under the first year coach Brian Paijer. Irvine will open their season against the Utes in their first action of the season; this will be the first meeting between these two schools. The women will compete against an up and coming San Diego State team on Saturday. Last year the Utes beat San Diego State 166-120 in the only meeting between the two.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK:
This is the Utes season opener, last year Utah's men finished with a record of 1-6 overall and 0-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The women finished 4-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
UTE NOTES:
Utah has a very young team on both fronts; the men include nine newcomers and are looking for key performances by swimmers Evan Castro, Jon Larsen and Cody Rempfer. The women will be looking for an early barometer on what to expect when they open conference play with an unusual early meeting with the San Diego State Aztecs. The Aztecs will be the second of two meets for the women this weekend.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MICHAEL LITZINGER:
"We are excited to get off the blocks against different swimmers other than our team. The men have a new look and a new attitude coming into this season, while the women are poised to have a great start with an early conference meet."
