SALT LAKE CITY -
Annie Medcalf, a member of Utah's gymnastics team from 2001-02, had a promising career cut short when a tumor was discovered in her vertebra. She underwent surgery last spring that required the fusing of five vertebrae, along with the removal of the tumor. Medcalf, a former U.S. National Team member from Stow, Ohio, has remained with the Utah team as an undergraduate student-assistant coach while she completes her academic degree.
BREAK TIME!!!
At the end of the first week in October the University of Utah gives all of its students a well-deserved fall break, so there were no classes on Thursday and Friday. The Red Rocks have had a great six weeks of training, but every once in a while it's nice to get away from the daily grind of classes and practice. So, we shut the gym down and the whole team got a chance to relax.
Many of the girls stayed here to catch up with studies and shopping, but a few of us took advantage of the time to get home or to take a little road trip. Kim hung out in Salt Lake and kept herself busy. She and "V" (Veronique) chilled at the SL Rib Fest listening to jazz bands, watched a ton of movies, and studied hard, as usual. "V" also did some car shopping and hangin' with her main man. Kulio and her new friend did the road trip home to Colorado Springs to see her sister in a dance performance. They also went hiking on Pike's Peak, and did a little hometown shopping. Kylee had a weekend get-away in Las Vegas with some old friends. Sounds like they had a great time. Mel did a road trip with a bunch of her friends and camped at Lake Powell in southern Utah. She spent the weekend working on her tan and hanging out with boys-her two favorite past times. Annabeth's mom and sister came to town for a visit. They spent most of their time working on AB's new apartment; however, they did squeeze in a trip or two to the downtown malls. Gritt spent most of her time catching up with studies. She and her roommate did take a break though and hit the outlet mall in Park City for some light shopping. Natalie was so excited about her trip back to Pennsylvania that she was completely packed a week early! At home she had a chance to see some friends and go shopping for more Ltd. 2 clothes and shoes to add to her already vast collection of 35 or 40 pairs. Kristen's mom flew out and they spent most of their time shopping at the outlet mall and hanging out in Park City with Dominique and Crystal-can you tell this team likes to shop?
Even though this weekend was supposed to be for relaxation, some of the Utes used the time to lend a helping hand. Dominique, Crystal, and Veronique helped out with the Special Olympics; signing autographs and judging some of the gymnastic events. ("V" wanted to say hi to John Paul, her new favorite gymnast!). Kim and Crystal helped with Habitat for Humanity, putting up siding on a few houses.
So, as you can see, everyone had a great break, jam-packed with fun and excitement and oh yes let's not forget......SHOPPING. The team is back in the gym now; feeling rested and ready to go as we begin our second stage of preparation. I know all of you are probably really busy, but don't forget every once in a while to take some time out of your crazy schedules to relax and do something different. Remember, life is too short to let it pass you by!
GO UTES!
