ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah cross country runners competed at the Mountain Region Championships on Saturday, Nov. 16, in Albuquerque, N.M. The Ute men and women both notched ninth-place finishes. Guiding the men was Delfino Arevalo, who nabbed an impressive ninth-place finish out of 114 runners (30:36). On the women's side, Charity Vernon led Utah when she finished 30th out of 123 runners (22:14).
The women's team entered the race ranked 10th in the Mountain Region, but Charity Vernon's 30th place finish in the 6K race moved the team to a ninth place finish in the region. Following Vernon, were Stacie Grover (42nd, 22:33), Jenny Brusch (44th, 22:36) and Nellie Hammons (66th, 23:04).
The men's team also entered ranked 10th within the Mountain Region, but finished ninth in the region. Arevalo's ninth-place finish likely qualified him individually for the NCAA Championships in the 10K. Arevalo was the fourth individual finisher not on a qualifying team. Following Arevalo were Nephi Tyler, (34th, 31:14), Lion Gallegos (48th, 31:48) and Brent Moore (58th, 31:58).
Winning the women's title was the returning national champion BYU and nabbing the men's title was Northern Arizona. BYU's women team placed five runners in the top ten in the 6K race. Michaela Manova, of BYU, won the women's race, while Colorado's Jorge Torres took the men's 10K.
Delfino will compete in the NCAA Championships in Terra Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 25.
