CLEVELAND -
Annie Medcalf, a sophomore on this year's Utah gymnastics team, underwent surgery on April 30 at the Cleveland Clinic to remove a tumor from her vertebra. The surgery, which was believed to be a success, took seven hours. The tumor was benign. Her doctors fused five vertebrae and took a bone from her hip to complete the procedure. She will remain in the hospital for another two to three days before returning to her home in Stow, Ohio.
Medcalf, a former U.S. National team member, competed in four meets this past season for the Utes before the tumor was discovered. Her last meet was her best. On Feb. 22 in Ann Arbor, Mich., Medcalf scored a 9.825 on the uneven bars and tied her career high with a 9.875 on the balance beam vs. the Wolverines.
A decision on whether Medcalf will be able to return to gymnastics will be made later. If she does, it will mark her second return after back surgery. She also had an operation on her back prior to her freshman year at Utah.
