University of Utah All-America gymnasts Theresa Kulikowski and Shannon Bowles have been named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America Women's At-Large first-team. Kulikowski was chosen as the NCAA Division I Team Member of the Year. She is the first University of Utah athlete ever chosen as a Verizon Academic All-America Athlete of the Year in any sport. Bowles and Kulikowski, who led Utah to a fourth-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Championships, were among 15 at-large student-athletes named to the first-team and the only two chosen from the same school.
Kulikowski, a three-time NCAA champion, two-time NCAA runner-up and 12-time All-American, graduated after her junior year this spring with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average in exercise and sport science. She will compete as a senior next year while starting graduate coursework. At the 2002 NCAA Championships, Kulikowski finished third in the all-around and on the balance beam, fifth on the uneven bars and 11th on the balance beam. She won the NCAA all-around and balance beam championships as a freshman in 1999 and placed second on vault and floor exercise. She was the 2001 NCAA balance beam champion as a sophomore after missing the previous year due to knee surgery.
Bowles, a nine-time All-American, placed third on floor exercise, sixth in the all-around and seventh on the balance beam at the 2002 NCAA Championships. She is the only four-time first-team balance beam All-American in Utah gymnastics history. The 2002 NCAA North Central Gymnast of the Year, Bowles graduated with a 3.81 GPA in psychology and exercise and sport science. She received a prestigious NCAA post-graduate scholarship and Utah's Bud Jack award, which goes to the graduating female student-athlete with the highest GPA.
