THIS WEEK: The University of Utah cross country teams will head to Bozeman, Mont., to compete in the Montana State Invitational on Sat, Sept. 21. In addition to Utah and Montana State, the Utes will compete against Montana, Utah State and Idaho State. Competition begins at 9:00 a.m.
QUOTING HEAD COACH BRIAN APPELL: "The Montana State Invitational will be the last warm-up meet prior to the scoring season for the Utes," states Appell. "We are progressing and moving up in the ranks. We will rest several key athletes for next week's meet."
LAST WEEK: The cross country teams competed in the Fall Classic on Sat., Sept. 14 in Provo, Utah. The men's team, running a four mile race, finished fourth (82 points), while the women finished third (92 points) in the 6K race. Junior Delfino Arevalo led the men's team with a 13th-place finish (20:42.70) and sophomore Charity Vernon led the way for the women's team placing 21st (22:39.30).
"I am pleased with how the athletes are performing," said Appell. "We are on track to place well at the conference and regional championships. As the season progresses and the race distances move to five and six miles, we should move into striking distance."
UTES ON THE MOVE: Delfino Arevalo, last year's California Junior College State Champion in the 10,000, showed much potential by leading the Utes in the Fall Classic. "Delfino has started to adjust to the higher elevation and is continually improving each week," said Appell.
NEXT MEET: Next on the schedule for Utes is the Roy Griak Invitational. The competition will take place in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 28 and is the first scoring event towards qualifying for NCAA's for the Utes.
