Bowles Named NCAA Utah Woman Of The Year

University of Utah gymnast Shannon Bowles has been chosen as one of 50 NCAA Woman of the Year state winners for 2002. Bowles will represent the state of Utah at the annual NCAA Woman of the Year dinner on November 2 in Indianapolis, where the winner will be announced. The 10 finalists for the award will be released in the September 16 issue of the NCAA News.
The NCAA Woman of the Year selections are based on grade-point average, athletic achievements and community service. Bowles, a 2002 first-team Verizon CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American, graduated cum laude with a 3.83 cumulative GPA, while earning bachelor's degrees in exercise and sport science and psychology. She won a prestigious NCAA post-graduate scholarship and was named the Mountain West Conference Female Student Athlete of the Year for 2001-02. She won Utah's Bud Jack Scholar-Athlete Award, which honors the graduating female athlete with the highest cumulative GPA, made the Dean's List every semester and is a 2002 NCAA Top VII award nominee.
Athletically, Bowles was a nine-time All-American and led Utah to the NCAA Championships four years. She was a three-time first-team All-American last year, placing sixth in the all-around, third on the floor exercise and seventh on the balance beam at the NCAA Championships to lead Utah to a fourth-place national finish. She was named the 2002 North Central Region Gymnast of the Year.
She was also active in community service, volunteering at the 10th East Senior Center and a rape recovery center. She also participated in the 2001 Walk for Diabetes and the 2000 Race for the Cure.
