SALT LAKE CITY -
Each week, a Ute gymnast will contribute an excerpt for the Utah Gymnastics Diary. This week's edition of the Utah Gymnastics Diary is provided by senior co-captain and All-American Melissa Vituj.
Another year (No. 29) of Utah Gymnastics is underway! The 2003-2004 Gym-Utes reported on August 19th, after a fabulous summer. Optional practices got started right away and everyone was excited to show what they had accomplished over the summer. It was impressive! Everyone came back in great shape.
During the preseason we have participated in several activities other than practice. First was the "Ute Fan Fest!" We always look forward to the "Fan Fest," because it's a time for us to see and chat with all of our wonderful fans. Our fans are great and we couldn't do it without them! Well, maybe we could, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.
We have also done some mountain activities. Some of us have been rock climbing with Aki, and in early September we all did a team hike to Lake Mary and Twin Lakes. Both were a lot of fun despite some girls being a little bit afraid of heights and a couple girls taking wrong turns on the hike! All of our activities have been great, but it's especially fun to get out in the mountains with each other. And, of course, pictures of this beautiful place are a must!
This past weekend we participated in the City of Hope Run/Walk for Breast Cancer. Our team led the warm-up and everyone did a marvelous job! Among our team members, Annabeth and I took first and second, while Megan and Veronique were right behind us! This was our second year to participate in this event. It's a lot of fun and a great cause.
Now in the middle of October, we all have our feet safely back on the ground and we've really hit the ground running! Everyone is working hard right now, but we can't wait for January to come so that we can perform in the Huntsman Center again. Many on the team have learned new skills and we are also in the process of perfecting our old ones. Right now we are working on combining the skills that will make up our routines. It is always a big step going from skill development to combinations but everyone is doing a super job. Some are even starting to do full routines.
The new freshman are adjusting well and we all think they're great. All four of them have wonderful personalities and do some awesome gymnastics. They will bring a lot to this team. The sophomores and juniors came back stronger than ever and are doing an exceptional job in the gym. Their enthusiasm is contagious! As for Veronique and me; we can't believe that we are seniors. The past three years have gone by so quickly. It's hard to imagine that this is already our last year.
The whole team is working hard every day giving a 100 percent effort! We can't wait to see all of you again in the Huntsman Center. But if you can't wait until January to see your "Red Rocks", stop by and watch us practice! Our training is always open to the public. We train Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM.
Veronique will give another update next week.
Until then............GO UTES!
