THIS WEEK:
The Ute cross country team will host the second half of the Utah Invitational at Soldier Hollow, Utah, Jan. 23-24. The 10-team event will consist of the 5/10-km classical and the 10/15-km freestyle.
Currently, New Mexico (287.0) and Denver (275.0) hold down the first- and second-place standings, followed by Utah (268.0) in third and Colorado (210.5) in fourth.
Friday will feature the women's classical race at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men at 11:00 a.m. Saturday's freestyle events will begin with the men skiing at 10:00 a.m., while the women will race at 11:00 a.m.
LAST WEEK:
Defending NCAA champion Utah placed fourth last weekend at the Nevada Invitational. The Utes skied to a second-place standing on the opening day, but slipped to fourth after several unlucky mishaps in day two. Denver ended up placing first, followed by Colorado finishing second. The Lobos of New Mexico rounded out the top three.
Junior Henning Dybendal led the nordic squad, winning the classical event and placing second in the freestyle race. Newcomers Daniel and Benjamin Sonntag lifted the Utes, skiing to top 15 finishes throughout the two-day event.
Sophomore Jenny Hansson and freshman Sandra Gredig powered the women's cross country team, finishing with top 10 scores in almost every event.
Junior Ben Thornhill came up big for the Utes, skiing to two sixth-place finishes in both the slalom and giant slalom events. Will McDonald and Gaspar Perricone came away scoring in the top 25 during the invite.
The women's alpine team was headlined by Rowena Hyldahl and Lauren Lattimer. A junior, Hyldahl finished third in the GS, while teammate Lattimer skied sixth in the SL.
UTE NOTES:
Freshman Casey Simons was named to the U.S. Ski Team World Junior Championships team after torching the competition at the U.S. Nationals held in Rumford, Maine. The nordic skier earned this honor after several first-place finishes at the 2003 Junior Nationals.
Junior downhill skier Elisha Stephens will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury she acquired during the slalom event at the Nevada Invitational.

NEXT WEEK:
The alpine team will travel to Taos, N.M., while the nordic squad will compete in Red River, N.M., as Utah skies in the New Mexico Invitational. This event will be held Feb. 6-7. Race times are TBA.
