SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah basketball fans got their first glimpse of the 2004-05 men's and women's basketball teams Thursday night during the annual "Night with the Utes" at the Huntsman Center.
Both the Ute men and women participated in scrimmages. Then both teams took part in three-point shooting and a two-ball contests.
The Utah men defeated the Ute women in the three-point shooting contest. The men's team of Casey Iverson, Jonas Langvad, Richard Chaney and Marc Jackson bettered the women's quartet of Julie Wood, Heidi Carlsen, Lana Sitterud and Kim Smith 59-46. Meanwhile, junior guard Shona Thorburn teamed up with men's player Justin Hawkins to win the two-ball competition. The evening's festivities wrapped up with an autograph session.
Sophomore post player Andrew Bogut scored nine points while converting all four field goals and grabbed four rounds to lead the Red team to a 26-19 win in the men's 15-minute scrimmage. Jackson had nine points and three steals to pace the White team.
Freshman guard Jermaine Calvin made three-of-four field goals and scored seven points while playing for the Red team. Chaney had four points and two steals. Junior guard Tim Dridsom, who left the scrimmage early after spraining his right ankle, had three points and three assists.
Freshman center Luke Nevill contributed four points and a pair of rebounds for the White team. The Red outshot the White 61 to 50 percent fro the floor. Both teams converted two-of-three three-pointers.
Junior forward Kim Smith converted three-of-four attempts from the field, scoring six points and leading the Red team to a 20-13 victory in the 10-minute women's scrimmage. Sophomore forward Shauna Brouillard also scored six points in the scrimmage, tallying four for the White team and two for the Red.
The Red team converted nine-of-14 from the field, shooting better than 64 percent for the scrimmage. Senior guard Lana Sitterud and sophomore guard Heidi Carlsen each tallied five points and had the only three-pointers of the contest.
The Utah women open exhibition play next Tuesday night, facing Baden Sports in a 7 p.m. contest at the Huntsman Center.
The Ute men open the exhibition season against Carroll College on Saturday, Nov. 6. The game is tentatively scheduled for 7:00 p.m. but may be moved to the afternoon if the Utah home football game against Colorado State is scheduled for the evening to accommodate television.
