SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's swimming and diving team has won the Mountain West Conference regular-season title. The Utes share the honor with Colorado State, which also posted a 6-1 record in MWC action.
"The women won a share of the regular season championship, which is unprecedented," Head Coach Michael Litzinger said. "I'm extremely proud of them."
Utah's sole conference loss on the year came last Friday night a Brigham Young, where Utah, without two of its top swimmers (Neringa Statkeviciute and Loren Sweny) won six of 11 events in the pool, but fell behind early by 32 points because of diving. "We out-swam BYU, but it is a swimming and diving meet," Litzinger noted.
CSU's conference loss came at the hands of the Utes, who beat the Rams 129-109 on Jan. 17. It was the first time Utah had beaten CSU in Litzinger's tenure.
Utah will now focus its attention on the 2004 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held Feb. 18-21, in Oklahoma City.
