The Utah baseball team (4-11) travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for a three-game series at New Mexico (3-12-1) to open conference play this Friday-Sunday, March 19-21. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., Saturday's game will be played at 1 p.m. and the Sunday game begins at noon.

Utah Update
Utah went 0-3 last week in a three-game series at Pacific. On Friday, the Utes out-hit Pacific 14-9, but stranded 11 runners and gave up three runs in the seventh and eighth innings in a 5-4 loss to the Tigers. Freshman Travis Kohn suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 1-2 on the year. Utah's starter, sophomore Jason Price, gave up four runs on eight hits. He struck out 10 and walked just one in 7.1 innings pitched. Six Utes had multi-hit games, led by TJ Floyd, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
On Saturday, Utah was shut out 3-0. The Utes managed just five hits by five different players in the defeat. Junior Doug Mackay (1-4) suffered the loss on the mound, pitching all eight innings. He gave up three runs on eight hits, while striking out five and walking two.
In the series finale on Sunday, Utah scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but its comeback fell just short, falling 11-10. Utah out-hit the Tigers 13 to 12, but stranded 13 runners on the game. Freshman Travis Kohn (1-3) suffered the loss on the mound, pitching 2.0 innings and giving up one run on two hits. The Utes' starter, Shad McCord, gave up four runs on four hits. The four Utah pitchers struck out just three batters on the game. Junior Matt Ciaramella went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI on the day. He also walked three times. Sophomore Ryan Khoury was 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI, while Tyson Olson went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Scouting the Opposition
New Mexico scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Texas Tech, 4-1, Tuesday night. Junior right-hander Cooper Eddy (2-2) won his second consecutive start by only allowing four hits and one run in seven innings of work, while striking out five. Eddy surrendered his only run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, giving the Red Raiders a slim 1-0 lead. The Lobo bats came alive in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits. New Mexico added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Sean Murray went 2-for-4 in the game with two doubles.

Pena Named MWC Player of the Week
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record last week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Utes Picked to Finish Fourth in MWC
Utah tied with New Mexico to finish fourth in the MWC in the preseason coaches poll. The Utes and the Lobos collected 12 points apiece in the poll. UNLV, last year's regular-season and tournament champion, received four of the six first-place votes and collected 24 points to capture the top spot in the poll, followed by San Diego State with 22 points. Brigham Young earned 15 points to place third. Air Force ranked sixth with five points.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
