The Utah baseball team (5-16, 1-5) travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a three-game series at Air Force (5-24, 0-6) this Friday-Sunday, April 2-4. Utah Update
The Utes dropped all three games in the series with Brigham Young last Thursday and Saturday. On Thursday, Utah gave up 18 hits and eight stolen bases en route to the 13-3 loss. Sophomore Jason Price suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 1-4 on the year. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking three. Utah's seven hits came from seven different players. Junior Trevor Eastman drove in two runs, while TJ Floyd brought in the other.
On Saturday, the two teams played the longest game in the history of both the Mountain West Conference and the series as the Utes fell 5-4 in 17 innings. Senior Ben Buck suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 0-1 on the year. He pitched one inning, giving up one run on one hit. Utah's starter, junior Doug Mackay, threw nine innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, while striking out six and walking two. Junior Clay Westmoreland threw seven scoreless innings of relief. Senior Eric Chevalier led the way at the plate, hitting for the series. He finished the game 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI.
In the second half of the doubleheader and the final game of the series, Utah fell 11-10 in 10 innings. Utah freshman Eric Schaler suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 0-2 on the year. He pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, while walking two and striking out one. He was one of six hurlers for Utah, including starter Ben Buck, who went three innings after having pitched the final inning of relief in the first game. Freshman Jay Brossman led a group of five Utes with multi-hit games, going 4-for-5 with two runs. Matt Ciaramella was 4-for-6 with two runs and one RBI, while Ryan Khoury was 3-for-5 with one run and five driven in.
Scouting the Opposition
Air Force was swept by Northern Colorado 11-6 and 15-3 in a Tuesday doubleheader. In game one, the Falcons failed to hold a 6-3 lead, allowing the Bears to rally to a 11-6 win. UNC scored four runs in the fifth to take the lead and then added four insurance runs in the sixth. Jeff Tetrault took the loss for Air Force, falling to 1-3 on the season. Jackson Edwards made his first career start for the Falcons, allowing three runs in three innings pitched. The Falcons had eight hits in game one, with Reid Lamson and Dale Kasel slugging their first collegiate-career home runs.
In game two, UNC jumped all over Falcon starter Travis Fugler -- who made his first-ever pitching appearance, scoring seven unanswered runs in the first two innings to sail to a 15-3 win. Fugler gave up six runs in 1.2 innings pitched. Air Force was held to six hits by six different players in the second game.

Chevalier Takes 27-Game MWC Hitting Streak into Air Force Series
Senior outfielder Eric Chevalier takes a 27-game MWC hitting streak into the Air Force series this weekend. Chevalier had hits in each of the final 21 conference games last year and all six this season.
Pena Named MWC Player of the Week
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record last week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Utes Picked to Finish Fourth in MWC
Utah tied with New Mexico to finish fourth in the MWC in the preseason coaches poll. The Utes and the Lobos collected 12 points apiece in the poll. UNLV, last year's regular-season and tournament champion, received four of the six first-place votes and collected 24 points to capture the top spot in the poll, followed by San Diego State with 22 points. Brigham Young earned 15 points to place third. Air Force ranked sixth with five points.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays its conference home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
