Utah (13-26) faces Utah Valley State (17-15) twice this week. On Tuesday, the Utes travel to Provo, Utah, for a 7 p.m. game at Larry H. Miller Field on the Brigham Young campus. The following day, Wednesday, May 5, the two teams face off at 2 p.m. at Ute Field.

Utah Update
Utah dropped three games at Brigham Young last week. In the series opener on Thursday, Utah fell 7-4. Sophomore Jason Price (2-7) suffered the loss on the mound. He pitched six innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits, while striking out four and walking six. Senior Eric Chevalier led the Utes at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Senior Cort Wilson was the only other Ute with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
On Friday, with the game tied at seven apiece in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Utes gave up two runs, one on a mental error and one on a fielding error, en route to a 9-7 loss to BYU. Junior Clay Westmoreland (2-5) suffered the loss on the mound. In one inning pitched, he gave up two runs, neither of which was earned, on one hit, while striking out two. Junior Matt Ciaramella led the Utes at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. He walked twice. Senior Jared Pena was 2-for-4 on the game with two runs and another driven in.
In the series finale on Saturday, Utah lost its 13th in a row to the Cougars, a 14-9 defeat. Freshman Travis Kohn (2-5) suffered the loss on the mound, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up two runs on three hits, while walking two and striking out one. Freshman Jay Brossman led the Utes at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Pena was 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, while senior Michael Westfall, Jr. was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Scouting the Opposition
UVSC went 1-1 at Northern Colorado last weekend. In the first game, UVSC committed five errors, which led to 13 unearned runs, in a 22-9 loss. Jason Ward suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 3-3. He threw four innings, giving up 10 runs, only two of which were earned, on nine hits, while striking out five. Canyon Vance led the way offensively with a 4-for-5 day. Four other UVSC hitters had multi-hit days, including Jeremy Harris, who was 3-for-5 with three runs. Reno Mendenhall went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, including a solo home run. Pepe Jones also went 2-for-4, with a home run. Jeff Broadhead rounded out the multi-hit club with a 2-for-5 day.
In the second game on Sunday, UVSC rallied for a wild 16-12 win over Northern Colorado. Jed Jensen (4-3) earned the win, pitching the final 2.1 innings and allowing just one run on one hit, while striking out five. Harris finished the day 5-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Mendenhall went 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, four runs scored and four RBI.

Ciaramella MWC Player of the Week April 19-25
Junior Matt Ciaramella was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for April 19-25 after helping Utah take two of three games at San Diego State as he belted five doubles and a home run vs. the Aztecs. Ciaramella started the week with a home run, a run scored and two RBI vs. Utah Valley State. In a one-run loss to SDSU in the series opener, he was 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and two RBI. In game two, he hit a pair of doubles, drove in two runs and scored another as Utah won 7-6. In the series finale, Ciaramella hit two more doubles, drove in another two runs and scored twice in a 9-4 victory. For the week, he hit .438 (7-for-16) with eight RBI, five runs scored, five doubles and two home runs.
Buck MWC Pitcher of the Week April 5-11
Ben Buck was named MWC Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11. Buck, a senior from Thornton, Colo., went 1-0 in three appearances. In a doubleheader against Southern Utah, he pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up just two hits, while striking out three. He pitched one inning of relief in the second game of the series against the Lobos, giving up one hit. The following day, he threw a complete-game win, pitching all nine innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits. For the week, Buck pitched 12.0 innings, giving up just one earned run on nine hits for 0.75 ERA.
Pena MWC Player of the Week March 1-7
Senior shortstop Jared Pena was named the MWC Player of the Week for March 1-7 after leading the Utes to a 3-0 record on the week. Pena hit .571 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI on the week. He also had a stolen base on his only attempt. In the first game against Southern Utah, he went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. In the second game vs. the Thunderbirds, Pena was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. On Saturday, Pena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, with four runs scored and five RBI.
Franklin Covey Field
Utah plays the majority of its conference home games at state-of-the-art Franklin Covey Field (15,500). The 13,000-seat facility (not including the general admission area) also serves as the home to Salt Lake's AAA baseball team, the Stingers, an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels.
On Deck
Utah hosts Air Force for a five-game series this Friday-Sunday, May 7-9, at Franklin Covey Field. Friday and Saturday the two teams will play doubleheaders, beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday's single game will begin at noon. The teams are making up two games that were postponed due to snow when the teams faced each other in Colorado Springs, Colo., in early April.
