The MWC conducted the voting that consisted of the eight head coaches and select media representatives.
Defending champions Colorado State earned top billing with 118 points. The Rams received all but one of the 15 first-place votes.
BYU, with its 100 points, narrowly edged out the Utes and their 97 points for second. Utah was the only other program to receive a first-place vote.
Rounding out the rest of the poll is San Diego State (65 points), Wyoming (59), UNLV (40), New Mexico (33) and Air Force (28).
Shelly Sommerfeldt was the only Ute highlighted on the preseason all-conference squad. The junior outside hitter finished the 2003 campaign with all-conference honors, ranking seventh in the MWC in kills-per-game (3.64).
