Sept. 1, 2004
This Week:
The Utah cross country teams will kickoff their 2004 schedules in Ogden, Utah, at the WSU Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 4. The Utes were originally scheduled to compete in Utah State's USU Invitational, but the meet was canceled earlier this week. The race, featuring only Utah and Weber State, will take place at the Weber County Fair Grounds and will kick off both schools' 2004 seasons.
Previewing the Competition:
The Utes will look to start off strong in Ogden against the tough Wildcats. Weber State is coming off second-place finishes in both the women's 5k and the men's 8k races at the Big Sky Conference Championships.
On the men's team, the Wildcats return junior Riley Cook who finished sixth overall in the Big Sky Conference Championships. The women's team will feature sophomore Heidi Bouwhuis who finished fifth overall at the Big Sky meet.
Utes On The Run:
Senior, Delfino Arevalo is expected to lead the men's team this year. The Livingston, Calif., native is coming off a successful track season, having qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meters.
"Delfino qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships his junior year and had a great summer of training," said Ute head coach Brian Appell. "He has a great chance to improve upon that finish."
Junior, Elise Greenwood-Bahr had a breakout year in 2003, leading the women's squad the majority of the season. Unfortunately, an illness affected her performance during the Mountain Region Championship race.
"Elise had a great summer, coming into the early season in top form," says Appell. "With Elise healthy, this year's squad is gunning for the Falconettes of the Air Force Academy in the Mountain West Conference."
Future Meets:
The Utes will compete in the Montana State University Invitational on Sat., Sept. 16, in Bozeman, Mont.
