LAKESIDE, Calif. - The University of Utah men's golf team finished the first round of the Barona Cup tied for 15th with UC Santa Barbara, after shooting a 286 (-2) at the 72-par Barona Creek Golf Course. Play was suspended at the tournament with the second round in progress. The second round will resume tomorrow at 7 a.m. PDT with the intent to play the final 54 holes of the tournament.
For Utah, freshman Mike Branca leads the Utes with a four-under 68 after the first round, to finish the day tied for eighth. Senior Steve Newren sits at one-under (71) and is currently tied for 34th.
Sophomore Dustin Pimm finished the round tied for 54th after shooting even par on the day. Fellow sophomore Chris Gresh finished three strokes back from Pimm at 75 (+3) to finish tied for 86th entering the second day of competition. Freshman Chance Cota rounds out the Utes with a five-over 77 to finish the day tied for 95th.
