LAKESIDE, Calif. - The University of Utah men's golf team finished in a three-way tie for 12th place at the Barona Cup. The Utes shot an overall score of 852 (-12) with a two-under 286 in the first round, a one-under 287 in the second and a nine-under 279 in the final round. Washington State and UC Santa Barbara were the other two teams to tally a 12-under 852.
Sophomore Dustin Pimm led the Utes by finishing tied for 11th with a nine-under 207. Pimm shot an even-par 72 in the first round, improving by two strokes in the second round (70) before finishing the tournament with seven-under 65.
Senior Steve Newren finished at two under par (214) to tie for 41st overall. Newren shot a one-under 71 in the first round, but gave up two more strokes in the second round (73). In the third round, Newren turned in his best score of the tournament, a two-under 70.
Freshman Mike Branca started the tournament strong, posting a four-under 68 in the first round. Branca posted a one-over 73 in the second round before sliding in the final round with a four-over 76. Branca finished tied for 61st with an overall score of 217 (+1). Sophomore Chris Gresh and freshman Chance Cota finished tied for 75th after shooting a four-over 220. Gresh posted scores of 75-72-73, while Cota improved on his five-over 77 in the first round to finish at par in the second round and one-under in the final round.
The Utes travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to compete in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
