LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Utah sophomore Chris Gresh finished the first day of competition at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate with a five-under 139 to tie for the individual lead heading into the final round of competition Tuesday at the 72-par NMSU Golf Course. Gresh helped the Utes finish the day at 14-over par (590) to currently hold 11th place.
Gresh finished the first round at par (72) before shaving five strokes in the second round (67). Fellow sophomore Dustin Pimm shot an even-par 72 in the opening round, but gave up two strokes in the second round to finish two-over (146) and tie for 27th place.
Senior Steve Newren finished the first round of play at four-over (76), but improved in the second round with a one-under 71 to finish the day at three-over par (147) and enter the final round tied for 34th. Freshman Chance Cota tallied a seven-over 79 in both rounds to finish with a 14-over par 158 and finish the day tied for 73rd. Mike Branca shot a seven-over par 79 in the first round, but slipped in the second round to tally an nine-over par 81 and finish the day in 76th place.
