The Ute football team will conclude its spring drills this week with three practices and the third-annual Red-White game. Practices, which will be held at the McCarthey Practice Fields weather permitting, are scheduled for Tuesday (3:15-5:15 p.m.), Thursday (3:15-5:15 p.m.) and Friday (4:15-5:15 p.m.). The Red-White game (more information follows) will be Saturday starting at noon in Rice-Eccles Stadium. All practices and the Red-White game are free and open to the public. RED-WHITE GAME
The third-annual Red-White game will be held in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, April 23 starting at noon. It is free to the public and the players will sign autographs after the game. A pancake breakfast and a Muss flag football game will precede the Red-White game. The pancake breakfast costs $2 per person and food will be served from 9:00-10:30 a.m. in the Olympic Cauldron Park (the south plaza of Rice-Eccles Stadium). The Muss game will start at 11 a.m.
RED-WHITE FORMAT
The Red-White game will be consist of four 12-minute periods. The clock will stop in normal situations in the first half and the second half will feature a running clock. Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig and defensive coordinator Gary Andersen will serve as the head coaches at the Red-White game. Teams will be chosen Wednesday, April 20.
ON THE RADIO
Hot Ticket 700 will broadcast the Red-White game live from Rice-Eccles Stadium with a pre-game show beginning at 11:30 a.m. Matt Thomas (play by play) and Frank Dolce (color commentary) will call the action from the booth and Sharrieff Shah and Chris Tunis will add insight from the sidelines.
NOTES
Receiver John Madsen sprained his shoulder in Saturday's scrimmage and will miss the last week of spring ball ... Some other key players who will miss the spring game to injury or surgery: kicker Bryan Borreson (groin), linebacker Spencer Toone (shoulder), wide receiver/returner Justin Walker (knee) ... Sophomore quarterback Brian Johnson has taken the lion's share of the snaps this spring. In the two scrimmages, Johnson completed 34 of 54 passes (63%) for 438 yards, 1 TD and 2 interceptions. He was particularly sharp in the April 16 scrimmage, completing 14-20 passes for 197 yards (no interceptions). He also rushed a total of 18 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns. The only other quarterback to get reps in the two scrimmages leading up to the Red-White game is new junior college transfer walk-on Danny Southwick. Southwick completed 2 of 6 passes in both scrimmages for a total of 31 yards and 1 interception.
