SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah gymnastics team, which won its 21st national attendance crown in the last 24 years, remained No. 1 in the stands in postseason "competition" as well. Utah, which averaged 11,300 spectators to its six home meets, drew a crowd of 6,313 to the NCAA North Regional. There are no discount tickets, student rates or group tickets to NCAA postseason events. Below are the regional hosts in 2005 and their attendance:
Utah - 6,313
Alabama - 4,943
Florida - 3,289
Nebraska - 2,108
New Hampshire - 2,100
Washington - 1,962
The Utes drew the largest crowd to watch a women's gymnastics meet in 2005 when 14,100 people came to watch their win against Brigham Young. Their average attendance of 11,300 this season is the third-highest attendance average in Utah and NCAA gymnastics history. The Utes beat out runner-up Alabama this year, which averaged 10,570 fans to six home meets this year for a new Southeastern Conference record. Utah's attendance average since 1992 is almost that high (10,533).
Utah also holds eight of the top 10 single-meet attendance records. The Utes hosted the largest crowd ever to watch a collegiate gymnastics meet in the United States - 15,238 vs. Cal State Fullerton in 1991.
