Ute Gymnasts Will Compete For The NCAA Championship Tonight

AUBURN, Ala. -
The Utah gymnastics team will compete for the 2005 NCAA title tonight in Auburn, Ala., after qualifying for the Super Six for the 11th time since the format went into effect in 1993. The meet will start at 7 p.m. CDT. Click here for Real-Time Scores
Utah, which handily won yesterday's afternoon qualifying round with a 196.85 score, advanced along with Michigan (196.575) and Nebraska (195.875). Qualifying out of the evening session were Georgia (197.350), UCLA (197.025) and Alabama (197.00).
Ute freshman Ashley Postell and senior Annabeth Eberle, who placed 1-2 in the all-around in the first session Thursday with a 39.575 and 39.50, respectively, finished third and seventh once the evening tallies were in. Sophomore Rachel Tidd finished 12th with a 39.40. The scores rise in the night session and an all-around victor has never come out of the afternoon competition. The only individual award determined on Thursday was the all-around. However, one Ute score did hold up as the best of the entire day: Eberle's 9.95 on vault.
Utah hopes to put a similar lineup on the floor tonight as it did in winning its qualifying round. Tidd (back) and Gritt Hofmann (calf) were questionable going into the first day of competition and both received lengthy treatments for their injuries after returning to the team hotel. Athletic trainer Tom Iriye says that both are "hurting" today, but he anticipates they will compete tonight--Tidd in the all-around and Hofmann on the floor, where she won first-team All-America honors and qualified for individual event finals.
In a double blind draw conducted by the NCAA committee last night, Utah was dealt the bye-before-floor rotation, which means the Utes will finish on the balance beam. Their complete rotation will be: bye, floor, vault, bye, bars, beam.
Utah will also be well represented in Saturday's individual event finals. Along with Hofmann on the floor, Postell, Eberle and Tidd will all compete. Postell made the vault, bar and beam finals, Eberle the vault and floor finals and Tidd will compete for the uneven bar title. All four are already deemed first-team All-Americans--Postell and Eberle in the all-around as well. Making the All-America second team were: Postell (floor), Tidd (all-around, vault), Nicolle Ford (bars) and Eberle (beam).
